Italian and foreign students can normally find accommodation in Trieste within a few days from their arrival. Usually two or three students share a flat, costing from 150 to 400 Euro each per month. Announcements of rooms or apartments available, or of students looking for fellow students to share, are put on the notice boards on the ground floor and the first floor of the SISSA Main Building in Miramare. Announcements (in Italian) can also be found by consulting the web site IL MERCATINO or buying a IL MERCATINO magazine from a 'Giornalaio'.

It is for your advantage to look for flats with necessary facilities. Especially washing machine is a necessity since 'washing centers' are not very common and the existing ones are simply expansive. It is really rare to have bills included in rents in Trieste and there may be some extra expanses for the maintenance of building etc. just make sure that you know what extra fees you are supposed to pay to arrange your budget.

Moreover, if you are paying bills separately be aware of the 'forecast system' in Italy: Bills are only crude forecasts of how much you could spend. Sometimes they overestimate your consumption and you can posssibly see a good old '500 euros' on your bill. Don't panic, just call them or ask an Itlian speaker friend to help you. They correct it imediately by checking the true amount of consumption.

A legal rent contract is compulsory for Permesso di Sogiorno (Permit of Short Stay) application procedure. A regular rent contract lasts for at least six months (typically a year), and it is mandatory for SISSA students to have a legal housing contract.
