Buses

You can find all relevant information about local bus lines and schedules on Trieste Trasporti Website. The website is in Italian but easy to understand: You can find further explanations in English here: Local transport

Intercity buses are not very common way to travel in Italy. People mostly use trains. On the other hand, buses are commonly used to travel to nearby countries (like Slovenia, Croatia or Serbia) in Trieste. There are regular buses from Trieste to also other countries. We suggest you to visit website Time Table of Coaches From Trieste to see shedules of all buses departing from Trieste.

Trains

It is the most common way of intercity transport among Italians. You should visit website of [Trenitalia]to see shedules and ticket availability. Be avare that you will be charged a high fine if you don't have a ticket to take a train and it is controled on the way by the ticketman. You'd better stamp it with one of the yellow machines around the platforms just before the trip. This is compulsory.

There are two ways to buy a ticket: one is to consult the ticket office (Biglitteria) and another is to use automats in the train stations. You are charged a little amount of extra price (like 50 cents) at ticket offices but purchase is free of charge at the automats. Automat can be a better choice for the newcomers for its english options and simply english speaking clerk is not guarantied in Italy. Sometimes there are also a quick purchase automats which offers the closest departure train tickets.
