Residence

Non-Italian people who are planning to stay in Italy for more than 3 months have to:

  1. request residence in Italy (that means to ask to add own name to the register of permanent population in Trieste) OR
  2. ask for the registration in the Register of Temporary people in Trieste (Iscrizione nel registro della popolazione temporanea: Popolazione Temporanea)

In order to obtain your residence in Italy you have to find a permanent accommodation (with a legal House rental contract) and you need to have an health insurance. Then you have to send the proper documents (that you can find and download from here) via e-mail (variazioneres@comune.trieste.it) to the Municipality Office that deals with residency applications -the anagrafe, ufficio residenza-. After a while (up to 60 days) an officer from the local Police will show up at your home to check that you actually live there and that there are no problems with your flat (keep your contract at hand - just in case). You won't be able to choose the day in which the police officer is going to show up... but you can choose the hour (more or less). Saying that you're free only in the early morning (7:30 - 8:30) is a good choice.

The Residence in Friuli Venezia Giulia give you the right to ask for the Fuel Discount Card.

The Residence in Italy give you the right to ask for the Italian ID card.

Generally, we suggest you ask for the registration in the Register of Temporary people in Trieste.

Documents

In order to request the residency you have to show the following documents:

  1. These 2 forms: doc1 doc2. We prepared an UNOFFICIAL English version of the two documents ( doc1_eng, doc2_eng ) in order, for non-italian speakers, to have a reference to follow while filling in the italian module. N.B. information marked as '**' is not compulsory, while '***' fields regard driving license and owned means of transport.
  2. Proof of sufficient means of subsistence: A statement from SISSA certifying the amount of your fellowship.
  3. Proof of enrollment: A statement from SISSA certifying that you're a PhD student and how long your PhD program will last. You can download a certificate of enrolment following the instructions in the page Study Certificates

  5. valid Id card or passport.
  6. Your Codice fiscale.
