In this page you will find a short summary of the tasks of the Governing bodies of SISSA and some information about the Students' Representatives and Postdocs' Representatives. Feel free to contact them for questions, needs, information about your PhD program, etc.

Elections

Every student can stand as a candidate to be representative either in the Area Council, in the Board of Directors and in the Senate of the School. In order for the elections to be valid at least 30% of the voters should cast their vote. In order to be elected, a candidate must have gathered at least 15% of the votes casted. If someone resigns or completes his/her PhD program a by-election can be held. Students are informed by an email sent from the Students' Secretariat about the dates and procedures for elections. For further information about specific tasks of the Governing Bodies of the School and elections, you can find the official documents here (in Italian only).

Administrative Council

The Consiglio d'Amministrazione (Board of Directors) is the governing body of the school which has the task to approve and control the budget of the school, the issues concerning both academic and administrative staff and financial matters in general (contracts, number of fellowships, missions, agreements for collaborating with other institutions...)

Its members are the Director, four representatives elected by the faculty, a representative for the administrative staff, two representatives elected by PhD students and two external members.

In general, all the decisions taken by the Senate pass through the Board of Directors in order to check and keep track of the committment for expenses and income. As students' representatives, we care above all that at the heart of the School our needs and expectations are kept, making SISSA a nice place to live in and an invaluable school of research and science.

Senate of the School

The Senate of the School coordinates the didactic and scientific activities of the School. Its members are the Director, the coordinators of the Areas, a number of professors from each Area, two elected Student Representatives, and a representative for the research personnel. The Senate designates the coordinators of the PhD Courses, determinates the number and distribution among the Areas of research and students' fellowships, and deal with every other aspect concerning the scientific and didactic side of SISSA.

Evaluation Committee

The 'Nucleo di Valutazione' (Italian for 'Valuation Committee') is the School main evaluation organism; its duty is to oversee the quality and effectiveness of research and didactic activity, certify the adequacy of the School teachers, and analyse the results of the yearly Students' Questionnaire.

The Nucleus is an independent branch aimed at performance evaluation, as established by Italian 'Legge 150/2009'. The Students' Representative elected inside this organism also sits in the School Council.

Five members take part in the committee: one Professor appointed by the School Director, one Student elected by all the PhD Students of the School, and three external members appointed by the Director and approved by the School Senate and Board of Directors. Each member works in the committee for two years and his/her position can be renewed only once.

Students' Council

The Students' Council is an advisory body for decisions about the Students' activities in the School, in particular regarding the didactics. It is composed by the Students' representatives in the School Council, in the Areas, in the Senate, in the Board of Directors and in the NUV. Every year the President of the Students' Council presents a report to the School Council about didactics and life of the students.

Area Council

The students' representatives in the Area partecipate to the Area Council, and a number of them may also partecipate to the Area Board, if the Area itself decides to activate it. The first body debates on questions concerning the Area, as for example teaching activities, joint supervision of PhD with other Universities, suspension of fellowships and such. The Area Board manages the routine administration, like the decision of the number of fellowships to be activated for each PhD course of the Area, the nomination of the doctoral committee for PhD thesis discussions and so on. Each Area is composed by the teachers of the Area, a representative for the research personnel, a representative for the tecnical-administrative staff, and a number of elected students representatives; this number is the maximum between the number of PhD courses and the 18% of the total number of the aforementioned components. Every PhD course elects its own representative; other supplementary representatives are elected by all the students from each Area. A research personnel representative for each Area is also elected. The students' representatives for the Area Council are, of course, the first persons of reference for PhD students, should they face any problem or have any question involving their PhD courses.
