All PhD students once every two years are requested to elect their representatives in the Administrative Council and in the Sector Council for the Sector they are members of. Students are also represented in some special committees of the School.

Role

Apart from signalling to the competent professor or to the competent administrative office the problems reported by other students, representatives' main duties are:

  • Organizing the SISSA summer party!
  • Help students in dealing with SISSA administration (and, if we can, also with Italian bureaucracy)
  • Calling the meetings of the students' general assembly
  • Sending a report each year to the School Council concerning students' problems, containing students' suggestions (both proposed or already put into practice - e.g. this web site -)
  • Giving advice to the School Senate on everything that might concern students (e.g. we gave advice on the new mission regulations)
  • Suggesting (and running) the annual evaluation questionnaire on behalf of the evaluation committee
  • so on and so forth...

Students' representatives meet altogether once a month (more or less) during Student Council meetings.

Elections

Every student can stand as a candidate to be Sector Council representative while only students with Italian citizenship can stand for the Administrative Council. In order for the elections to be valid at least 30% of the voters should cast their vote. If someone resigns or completes his/her PhD program a by-election can be held (provided that there is no candidate who stood in the previous elections who gained at least 10% of the votes). Elections are usually held in December and students are informed by an email sent from the Students' Secretariat.
