The "Gestione separata INPS" is a pension fund, financed with the mandatory social security contributions of insured workers. It was born in 1995 with the reform of pension system. More info can be found here.

In short, as a PhD, you need to subscribe to it in order to have your tax contributions (directly deducted from your gross salary) counted by the national pension system. Furthermore, it allows you to ask for the unemployment benefit ("sussidio di disoccupazione"). It amounts to the 70% of your net income until you find a new job, up to 6 months after the end of your PhD. To this end, you firstly need to obtain your personal INPS credentials. This procedure will also help you to get your ISEE score and allow you to take advantage of the cafeteria discounts.

INPS credentials

There are two ways in which access your INPS personal page: the "PIN dispositivo" and SPID credentials. If you are an holder of an Italian document (carta di identità), you need you have the SPID credentials, if you do not, you can only ask for a "PIN dispositivo" (see here). Go to the SPID section to see the instruction to obtain your SPID credentials. We strongly recommend you to activate your SPID account, it will ease your bureaucratic life.

Register to gestione separata

After you get your credentials, you can proceed to subscribe to Gestione Separata. The full procedure and all the information needed for the registration can be found here

SPID - only for an Italian ID card holders

Sistema Pubblico d’Identità Digitale is the unified access system to the online services of the italian public administration. Citizens and companies can access these services through a unique digital identity. This system was introduced to cope with the ever increasing number of web services, in order to have a single account instead of different credentials. The system, in principle, should be integrable at European level.

In order to get your credentials you need to choose a service provider: some of them have a free subscription, some other have a fee to pay at the moment of the recognition. The insertion of the data generally requires 10 to 15 minutes. Then you will have to set an appointment (physical or virtual) to validate the registration. We suggest to subscribe to the National Post Service (Poste Italiane) as a provider. You can register here.

Also people coming from a country not belonging to EU can obtain their SPID credentials. However they must already have

  • the Health National Service card (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale or SSN in italiano)
  • an Italian document
