The "Gestione separata INPS" is a pension fund, financed with the mandatory social security contributions of insured workers. It was established in 1995 with the reform of pension system. More info can be found on here.

In short, as a Ph.D., you need to subscribe to it in order to have your tax contributions (directly deducted from your gross salary) calculated by the national pension system. Furthermore, it allows you to ask for the unemployment benefit ("sussidio di disoccupazione"). It amounts to the 70% of your net income until you find a new job, up to 6 months after the end of your Ph.D. To this end, you firstly need to obtain your personal INPS credentials. This procedure will also help you to get your ISEE score and allow you to take advantage of the cafeteria discounts.

INPS credentials

There are two ways in which access your INPS personal page: the "PIN dispositivo" and SPID credentials. If you are a holder of an Italian document (carta di identità), you need you have the SPID credentials, if you do not, you can only ask for a "PIN dispositivo" (see here). Go to the SPID page to see the instructions to obtain your SPID credentials. We strongly recommend you to activate your SPID account, it will ease your bureaucratic life.

Please note that you can't choose a date in the future. So do it AFTER the beginning of your Ph.D. Normally, SISSA Ph.D. courses officially begin in October, 1st or in November, 1st (not on 3rd or 7th). If you began in a different period please ask the date of the official start date of your Ph.D. to the Students' Secretariat.
