If you are a non-European/EEA citizen and you wish to study your Ph.D. in Italy, you must apply for a permit of stay in order to legally stay in Italy with the visa issued by the Italian Consulate/Embassy in your country of origin.

The request for the permit of stay must be made WITHIN 8 WORKING DAYS after your arrival in Italy. The permit of stay is issued by the Police Central Station (Questura) in Trieste and entitles you to temporarily live in Italy, and to visit any Schengen Country.

In order to request your permit of stay you should fill a documentation kit RICHIESTA DI RILASCIO/RINNOVO DEL PERMESSO/CARTA DI SOGGIORNO PER CITTADINI STRANIERI which you can obtain at the Student´s Secretariat (SISSA Main Building OFFICE 238) or at the central Posta.

It is strongly recommened to fill the documentation kit with the help and supervision of the Student's Secretariat.

What documents do you need to apply for a permit of stay?

1. A documentation kit which includes the application form (Form 1 filled in) and a list of documents to be enclosed to the application (See the useful information for the application).

2. A revenue stamp marca da bollo of €14.62 to be put on Form 1. It can be bought at a tobacconist's tabaccaio where cigarettes are sold.

3. Photocopy of ALL pages of the passport (blank pages included).

4. Photocopy of the study programme certified by the Italian Embassy/Consulate which issued the entry visa (presentation letter written by SISSA institution supporting your visa application with the stamp of the Italian Consulate/Embassy where the visa was issued) and a certificate issued by the School/host institution if the Italian Consulate/Embassy has not put its stamp on the letter.

5. Proof of sufficient means of subsistence. Enclose a statement from SISSA institution certifying the amount of your fellowship. If you do not have a fellowship you should produce a bank statement.

6. Copy of the insurance policies valid for Italy for the entire period of validity of the permit of stay, which will cover you in case of illness and injury. For example, you can underwrite a health insurance policy that can be paid at any Post Office with the following insurance company: INA ASSITALIA, Via Curtatone 4/d, 00100 Roma, postal current account (c/c) no 71270003 (COST: for 6 months: € 49.00; for 12 months: € 98.00). This insurance only covers urgent hospitalization following a visit to the Emergency Room (Pronto Soccorso). Note that private insurance from your country is not accepted by the "Questura", unless you have an official paper from the Italian Embassy or Consulate in your country stating that your insurance coverage also extends to Italy. With regards to the accident insurance, your School/host institution should issue a declaration that you are covered by their insurance policy.

7. A receipt of the postal paying-in slip for the payment of € 27.50, which you have to pay upon submission of your application to the Post Office.

IMPORTANT All these documents must be enclosed and put inside the kit envelope "RICHIESTA DI RILASCIO/RINNOVO DEL PERMESSO/CARTA DI SOGGIORNO PER CITTADINI STRANIERI" !! THE ENCLOSED DOCUMENTS SHOULD BE COPIES (YOU MUST KEEP THE ORIGINALS) EXCEPT FOR FORM 1 !!
