There are two basic health insurances which are both payed by SISSA. One is called Sanitario Nazionale (National Health Insurance) and costs around 150 euros. Another one is called In Assitalia which costs around 99 euros.

Firts one is to be enrolled in the National (Regional) Health Care system and to have a full health coverage. This does not mean that everything is for free but that you have the possibility to have your "base" doctor whom you can visit for free and prescribe medicines/exams. Some medicines and all exams are subject to payment (maximun for exams is 36 Euros).

Application is simple: Fillout the postal form with the numbers below and pay it to any postoffice within working hours.

You should use a red payment receipt called Media:conti correnti postali.

sul C/Cn: 181347

euro 149.77 (centoquarantanove,77)

Intesto a: S.S.R. Friuli venezia giulia assessorato sanita

causale: iscrizione servizio sanitario nazionale 2009 cognome: Name:

After this payment take your Insureance receipt, temporary ID (Permit Application Receipt you were given from post office) and passport to one of the following offices:

Distretto Address Telephone number Opening
1 Via L. Stock 2040 3997849 - 7850 0403997849 - 7850 Mo-Tu-We-Fr from 8:30 am to 11:30 am
1 Opicina - Via di Prosecco 28/A 0402158143 We-Fr from 8:30 am to 12:00 pm

4 Via G. Sai 7 0403997453 - 7465 Mo-Tu-We-Th-Fr from 8:00 am to 11:00 am

Second insurance simply covers hospitalization if you have an address in Italy but it is strictly necessary for the first time Permit of Stay (Permesso di Sogiorno) application. So the thing is without the Media:'permit receipt' one cannot apply for Sanitaria Italia.

Eu citizens are subject to another procedure. Any EU citizen coming in Italy as a student has the right to be enrolled in the National Healthcare System (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) free of charge. In order to be covered by the SSN you have to file a request to the local healthcare agency (Azienda Sanitaria Locale - ASL). They should accept immediately your request (provided that you can show all the documents they require) and allow you to choose a general practitioner. Ask them for a practitioner who can speak English or your mother language. Check Rules for EU citizens.
